He contends: “The aim of appreciative inquiry is to generate new knowledge which expands ‘the realm of the possible’ and helps the members of an organisation to envision a collectively desired future and to design improved organisational systems and processes that successfully translate their intentions into reality, and beliefs into practice”. [1]   “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore” was the catch-cry of Howard Beale, the lead character in the 1976 movie Network, which won four Academy Awards. Beale was a TV news anchor who was fed up with the corrupt practices of the TV networks and the crazy situation the world was in at the time. Sadly nothing has changed. And so one night Beale said on camera to the viewers in New York and the sixty-seven affiliated stations around the country; if they too were angry about the corruption and the world going crazy hurting so many people, they should go and fling open their window and yell out at the top of their voice:  “I’m as mad as hell and I’m not going to take this anymore”. This they did. But then they just went back inside and continued watching TV and so things continued on the same. This brilliant 5-minute video taken from the film is worth a look, even if you’ve seen the movie.

[1] As quoted in Moving Forward: A Programme for a Participatory Economy, by Michael Albert (2001:128). A slight variation, which appeared almost fifty years earlier was Capitalism is “the astonishing belief that the nastiest motives of the nastiest men somehow or other work for the best results in the best of all possible worlds”. This was attributed to Keynes by Sir George Schuster in Christianity and Human Relations in Industry, 1951:109
